Straight ahead animation starts from the first drawing and works drawing to drawing to the end of a act. You can lose size, volume, and proportions with this technique, but it does have spontaneity and freshness. Fast, wild act scenes are done this way. Pose-to-Pose is usually arranged out and charted with key sketches done at intervals during the scene. Size, volumes, and proportions are regulated better this way, as is the action. The principal animator will turn charting and keys over to his helper. An assistant can be better operated with this technique so that the animator doesn't have to sketch every drawing in a scene. An animator can do more acts this way and concentrate on the preparation of the animation. Many scenes use a bit of both methods of animation.
